De Smet has supplied over 400 complete pressing plants.
Full Press
A full press is designed to extract the highest possible amount of oil from the seeds.
A full press used on conventional seeds such as rape or sunflower produces - in single or double pressing - a cake containing between 5 and 12%, in the best and worst cases.
The full press is generally the choice of the small oil mill, processing 100 to 150 TPD or less, or when solvent-free oil is requested.
This type of plant is indeed far cheaper than its solvent equivalent.
Our full presses have capacities ranging from 10 TPD to 70 TPD on a single press.
The operation of the press is fairly simple : It is fed by means of a variable speed conveyor, within the feeder unit.
The feeder regulates the flow of material into the press and thereby controls the loading on the press main motor. Oil released along the length of the cage is allowed to drain into the base of the press where it is collected. The solid material remaining within the press is finally discharged into conveyors to be removed for subsequent processing or storage.
We also have a range of mini full press mills, developed to meet an increasing demand for a relatively simple, small capacity screw press, suitable for village/cottage industry or on-farm applications and also for laboratory use.
Pre-press
Screw presses for low-pressure duty prior to solvent extraction yield cakes with 15 to 20% residual oil depending on required crushing levels. A pre-press is indeed always followed by a solvent extraction plant, which will leave less than 1% residual oil. A typical pre-press/solvent extraction system processes 1000 to 2000 tons of seed per day. Therefore, small differences in the oil in meal figures will result in big differences in oil production. Since crude oil sells for several times the price of meal, up to 7 times the price in the case of undehulled sunflower, maintaining low oil in meal figures is a major pre-occupation for extraction plant operators.
Current trends in the industry are towards larger and larger plants. However, it will also probably be designed with expansion in mind. Plants of this size have in turn driven a trend toward larger presses. The main reason for this trend is to obtain economies of scale. There are frequently very low margins to be made on oil extraction and operators are constantly seeking to maximise the production of the plant.
It is worth noting that our pre-presses can be adapted for conversion to high-pressure duty.
